As of October 2026, here is the short answer: a crack or bright line that appears on the iPhone Duo's inner screen without a drop or pressure is something to have assessed as a possible manufacturing defect under the Apple Limited Warranty. Damage from a drop, a squeeze in a bag or debris caught in the fold is accidental damage, which the standard warranty does not cover. With AppleCare+ in the US, Apple's published fee table lists $99 for inner display damage and $19 when only the cover layer is damaged. Without coverage, Apple's US estimate for an inner display repair is $999. A crease on its own is harder: Apple's public documents don't define when a crease becomes a defect, so document the symptom and let an inspection decide.

The most useful thing you can do before talking to Apple is work out which repair category your problem belongs to. "My screen is broken" can end up as a free defect repair, a low-cost cover layer swap or a full inner display replacement, and the price gap between those outcomes is large.

Crack, bright line, crease or scuffed cover layer: identify the symptom

Reports of damaged units arrived within hours of launch. The Verge reported on October 23, based on Reddit posts, that affected phones showed a similar pattern: a problem on the inner screen along the hinge and a bright line, or lines, across the right side of the display. One owner in Australia wrote that after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings, they felt something under the screen near the hinge while opening the phone, heard a crack, and found the screen broken along the fold. There were no marks on the screen surface or the outer hinge. The owner said an Apple Store replaced the phone with a new one on the spot. That is one person's account, not an Apple policy, and Apple did not immediately respond to The Verge's request for comment.

Most problems fall into one of four buckets:

  • Inner display panel damage: a crack under the surface, bright lines, dead areas or touch that stops working. This maps to the "inner display damage" line in Apple's fee table.
  • Cover layer damage: scratches or dents in the nano-texture cover layer on top of the inner screen. Apple lists "cover layer-only damage" as its own line item.
  • A visible crease: the fold catching the light. The key question is whether display or touch problems come with it.
  • Outer display or back glass damage: the same categories as any other iPhone.

Apple's iPhone handling information says the nano-texture cover layer is an integral part of the inner display. It reduces glare and reflections and protects the panel from scratches and dents, and Apple says plainly not to attempt to remove it. Peeling it yourself can turn a cover layer problem into inner display damage.

As soon as you notice something, record it. Photograph the screen on and off and at an angle under a light. If the hinge clicks or catches, take a short video while opening and closing. Note the date you first saw the problem and whether the phone was dropped or squeezed beforehand.

What the warranty covers and what it doesn't

Apple's hardware warranty covers manufacturing defects. Apple's AppleCare page notes that most Apple products come with one year of hardware coverage under the limited warranty, and in South Korea Apple's support page states that the iPhone warranty runs for two years from purchase under local consumer dispute rules. Either way, the warranty does not cover accidental damage. Apple's AppleCare materials define accidental damage as physical damage from handling due to unexpected and unintentional events. If neither the warranty nor consumer law applies, you pay for the repair, and if the problem is not eligible for service you may have to pay the full price of a replacement device.

Whether a crack is a defect or accidental damage is decided after Apple inspects the device, and Apple says the final service fee is set at that point. Be specific when you book: "the screen cracked along the hinge while I was opening it, with no drop" is far more useful than "it broke."

Creases are the gray area. The Apple documents checked for this guide don't describe how deep or visible a crease has to be to count as a defect. Rather than expecting a free fix for a crease alone, check whether it comes with a bright line, unreliable touch or a lifting surface, and lead with those symptoms.

Apple guarantees its service and replacement parts for 90 days or the remainder of the Apple warranty, whichever is longer. Replacement parts may be new or previously used genuine Apple parts that have passed Apple's functional tests.

What you pay with and without AppleCare+

What you pay with and without AppleCare+

AppleCare+ covers unlimited incidents of accidental damage, but each repair carries its own service fee. Apple's US fee table lists these iPhone charges for AppleCare+, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss and AppleCare One:

Table 1

← Swipe to see more

Damage type AppleCare+ fee (US)
Cover layer-only damage $19
Outer display and back glass damage $29
Inner display damage $99
Other accidental damage $99
Theft and loss $149

The cover layer and inner display lines exist because of the Duo's folding inner screen. Without AppleCare+, Apple's US estimates reported by The Verge are $49 for cover layer damage, $379 for outer display damage, $999 for inner display damage and $1,499 for other damage. The same report puts AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the iPhone Duo at $19.99 a month, $199.99 a year or $399 upfront, against a starting phone price of $1,999.

Fees differ by country. Apple Korea's fee page lists ₩29,000 for cover layer-only damage, ₩40,000 for outer display and back glass damage, ₩120,000 for inner display damage and ₩120,000 for other accidental damage, with no theft and loss line. Apple also states that AppleCare+ service is not guaranteed outside the country where the plan was bought, so check which country's plan you hold before traveling for a repair.

Two more details matter. Apple's out-of-warranty estimates apply to service from Apple itself, and Apple Authorized Service Providers can set their own out-of-warranty prices. For repairs covered by AppleCare+, the fee is the same at Apple and at authorized providers.

What to check before you book a repair

What to check before you book a repair

Work through this list before you hand the phone over:

  1. Check your coverage. Use Apple's coverage checker to confirm your warranty dates and whether AppleCare+ is active. Keep proof of purchase handy.
  2. Gather your evidence. Have your photos, video, the date you first noticed the issue and a clear account of any impact ready.
  3. Back up the phone. An inner display replacement or a device swap is possible, so back up first.
  4. Leave the cover layer alone. Don't peel a lifting edge and don't add a screen protector. Apple warns that an external protector can compromise the inner display's performance.
  5. Ask how the repair is classified. Is it a defect or accidental damage? If accidental, is it cover layer-only or inner display damage? In the US that is the difference between $19 and $99 with AppleCare+.
  6. Pick where to go. A Genius Bar or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will inspect the phone and explain your options. You can follow an open repair in My Support or the Apple Support app.

If you are weighing an independent shop, compare more than price. A folding display is a complex part, and if your AppleCare+ is active the same fee applies at authorized providers, so it makes sense to start with the official route.

Habits that protect the folding screen

Apple's handling information tells owners to remove anything from the inner display before closing the iPhone Duo. Folding a hard object such as a key or a coin inside the phone can damage the inner display. A quick look for grit before you open or close it is a cheap habit.

Treat the cover layer as a part Apple services, not something you replace yourself. If scratches build up, a cover layer replacement is a much smaller bill than an inner display, especially with AppleCare+. Skip third-party protectors on the inner screen.

If you are still deciding on AppleCare+, weigh the $999 out-of-warranty inner display estimate against the plan price and the $99 fee, and be honest about how often you drop your phone.

Frequently asked questions

My iPhone Duo inner screen cracked without a drop. Will Apple fix it for free?

A crack with no impact can be assessed as a manufacturing defect, which the Apple Limited Warranty covers. Apple decides after inspecting the device, so explain exactly what happened and bring photos or video. One early owner reported getting a new unit on the spot at an Apple Store, but that is an individual report, not a published policy.

Is a visible crease covered under warranty?

In the Apple documents checked for this guide, there is no published standard for when a crease counts as a defect. If the crease comes with a bright line, touch problems or a lifting surface, lead with those symptoms when you ask for an inspection.

How much does AppleCare+ charge to fix an iPhone Duo screen in the US?

Apple's US fee table lists $19 for cover layer-only damage, $29 for outer display and back glass damage, $99 for inner display damage and $99 for other accidental damage. Each repair is charged separately.

What does an inner display repair cost without AppleCare+?

Apple's US estimate, as reported by The Verge, is $999 for inner display damage. Cover layer damage is $49 and outer display damage is $379. Apple inspects the device to set the final fee, and authorized providers can set their own out-of-warranty prices.

Can I peel off the inner screen's cover layer or add my own screen protector?

No. Apple says the nano-texture cover layer is an integral part of the inner display and you should not try to remove it. It also warns that an external screen protector can compromise display performance.
