As of October 2026, the iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone: a book-style phone with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, starting at $1,999 for 256GB in the U.S. Pre-orders opened on October 16 in more than 70 countries and regions, and the phone goes on sale on October 23. Before you buy, four things deserve a closer look: how visible the crease is, how to treat the replaceable cover layer on the inner screen (the part most people call the screen protector), what repairs cost with and without AppleCare+, and whether a first-generation foldable is worth buying on day one. Everything below comes from Apple's own announcement and AppleCare fee schedule, plus reporting I checked directly.
What is the iPhone Duo? Key specs at a glance
Apple introduced the iPhone Duo in a September 9, 2026 press release as "the first foldable iPhone." Opened, the 7.6-inch inner display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen. Closed, the 5.4-inch outer display offers 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Both screens share the same aspect ratio, so apps scale up proportionally when you unfold the phone.
The headline specs:
- Chip: A20 Pro, the same chip as iPhone 18 Pro, paired with a custom vapor chamber
- Battery: two batteries, one in each half. Up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display, and up to 24 hours of use when both screens are used equally
- Charging: about 50 percent in around 20 minutes wired, or around 30 minutes with MagSafe or Qi2
- Build: grade 5 titanium frame, Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display, IP68 water and dust resistance
- Cameras: 48MP Fusion Main with optical-quality 2x, 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, a Center Stage front camera and a FaceTime camera under the inner display
- Biometrics: Touch ID in the side button
- Connectivity: eSIM-only worldwide
- Options: star white or night sky, in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB
The hinge uses more than 100 components and supports the center of the display to keep it flat when open. The phone ships with a version of iOS 27 adapted for folding, including Split View, which lets you run two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time. Apple also said Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is coming later this year.
The crease and the inner screen's cover layer, explained

The crease is the first question anyone asks about a foldable. Apple's announcement says the inner display's nano-texture matte finish reduces glare and "minimizes crease visibility." Note the wording: minimizes, not eliminates. A folding panel has a fold line by design; the matte surface makes it catch less light.
It helps to know how the inner screen is built. According to Apple, a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer sit on top. That cover layer is a custom polymer with up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry. Below it, high-strength glass sits above and below the folding panel, with a titanium plate at the bottom. Custom adhesives let the layers slide past each other like pages in a book to relieve bending stress.
That top cover layer is where the screen protector question comes in. AppleInsider reported on an interview in which Apple hardware engineering VP Kate Bergeron said the layer is engineered to wear in for as long as possible and can be peeled off and replaced. The same report points out that the swap appears as an AppleCare service item, so it is most likely a job for Apple or an Authorized Service Provider rather than something to do at home. Because the hinge and display stack are tuned to the exact thickness and material of Apple's layer, a third-party film could damage the phone and could put warranty or AppleCare coverage at risk.
In practice:
- Don't peel the inner cover layer yourself. If it lifts, bubbles or scratches, book service.
- Don't add a separate screen protector on the inner display. The cover layer already does that job.
- The outer display is Ceramic Shield 2 glass, so treat it like a regular iPhone screen; if you add a protector, check that it doesn't interfere with your case.
- Judge the crease in person. Look at a white screen, at an angle, and with the display off.
Price: what you'll actually pay
In the U.S., the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, or $83.29 per month over 24 months, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations above that. Apple Upgrade, the Klarna-provided leasing program, starts at $57.99 per month on a 24-month term for eligible customers. Apple's own iPhone Duo Case costs $79, and the iPhone Duo Folio with a kickstand costs $129.
Carrier promotions can shift the math, but read them carefully. Headline "up to" credits usually assume the most expensive plan, a top-condition trade-in and sometimes a new line. Price the plan you would actually use, convert any monthly add-ons into a total over the contract, and compare that figure against buying the phone outright.
If you're buying in South Korea, Electronic Times reported local prices of โฉ3.29 million (256GB), โฉ3.59 million (512GB), โฉ4.19 million (1TB) and โฉ5.09 million (2TB). Carriers previewed common subsidies of up to โฉ450,000 on the priciest plans, with final amounts set on launch day, October 23.
Repair costs and AppleCare+: run the numbers first

Two screens and a hinge make repairs more expensive than on a slab iPhone. iFixit compiled Apple's U.S. out-of-warranty estimates:
- Inner screen cover layer damage: $49
- Back glass: $199
- Battery service: $229
- Rear camera: $229
- Outer display: $379
- Inner display: $999
- Other damage: $1,499
With AppleCare+, the same incidents cost far less. Apple's AppleCare fees and deductibles page lists, for iPhone in the U.S.: $19 for cover layer-only damage, $29 for outer display and back glass damage, $99 for inner display damage, $99 for other accidental damage and $149 for theft and loss. The inner display alone shows the gap: $999 out of warranty versus $99 with coverage.
If you already have a carrier insurance plan, check the terms before relying on it. Confirm that the foldable inner display is covered, whether a cover layer replacement is handled separately, and what the deductible is.
How it differs from a regular iPhone: eSIM, Touch ID and daily habits
Beyond the specs, the iPhone Duo changes some everyday routines.
eSIM only. There is no physical SIM tray anywhere in the world. If you travel and buy local SIM cards, or use a smaller carrier, confirm eSIM activation and transfer support first.
Touch ID instead of Face ID. The fingerprint sensor is built into the side button so it works the same way whether the phone is open or closed. Expect your banking and payment app sign-ins to feel different.
A different camera mix. The main camera's optical-quality 2x and the Ultra Wide do most of the work. If you shoot distant subjects often, compare it with the Pro models. In return, the folding design adds tricks such as taking selfies with the rear cameras while previewing on the outer display.
Pocket feel. Apple compares the closed phone to the size of a passport. Hold it with a case on and practice opening and closing it before you decide.
Should you buy at launch or wait?
The iPhone Duo goes on sale October 23 in the first wave of countries, with 28 more countries and regions following on October 30.
Buying now makes sense if you would use the big screen every day for reading, video or multitasking; you plan to add AppleCare+; and you have already placed a pre-order or secured stock.
Waiting makes sense if the crease or long-term wear of the cover layer worries you; an out-of-warranty $999 inner display repair would be a serious hit; or you want to compare carrier deals once they settle.
iFixit notes this is Apple's first iPhone with a plastic screen surface and a matte display, and that the hinge and multi-layer screen are untested in real-world use. Its advice: if you buy, buy AppleCare; otherwise, wait a few months to see how the folding screen holds up. There is no guarantee prices or promotions improve while you wait, so if your use case is clear, delaying has limited upside.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Have you seen the crease in person, on a white screen and at an angle?
- Have you picked the right storage? The jump from the $1,999 base model is significant, so weigh it against your photo habits and iCloud plan.
- Have you compared buying outright, leasing and carrier deals on a total-cost basis?
- Have you decided on AppleCare+ or insurance, and checked how the inner display and cover layer are covered?
- Does your carrier support eSIM activation?
- Have you committed to not adding a film to the inner screen, and to using official service for cover layer swaps?
- Have you chosen a case that fits how you hold and prop the phone?
The iPhone Duo packs a tablet-sized screen into a pocketable phone, but its price and repair costs are in a different league from previous iPhones. Understand the crease, the cover layer and the repair numbers first, and you'll make a decision you're comfortable with, whether that's on launch day or a few months from now.
