How to Travel to Kagoshima: Flights, Transport and Onsen
Where to check Kagoshima flight schedules, the 40-minute airport limousine bus, the 700-yen city pass versus the CUTE pass, and how Ibusuki and Kirishima compare for a ryokan stay.

In this post
As of October 2026, the simplest Kagoshima trip follows one line: fly into Kagoshima Airport, take the airport limousine bus to Kagoshima-Chuo Station (about 40 minutes), get around the city on a tram-and-bus day pass or the CUTE pass if you are crossing to Sakurajima, then spend a night at a ryokan in either Ibusuki (about 1 hour 40 minutes from Chuo) or Kirishima (about 1 hour 50 minutes). Schedules and fares change, so this guide focuses on where to check each piece and what the official figures were when I checked them. Every number below comes from the official pages of Kagoshima Airport, the Kagoshima Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau or the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO).
Kagoshima sits at the southern tip of Kyushu, and it is not a single-city destination. The downtown area, the Sakurajima volcano, the seaside spa town of Ibusuki and the mountain hot springs of Kirishima are each an hour or two apart. Decide where you will sleep first, and the rest of the itinerary tends to fall into place.
Check Kagoshima flights at the source
Before opening a fare-comparison site, look at the monthly schedule on Kagoshima Airport's official website. The airport publishes timetables by route and by month, with separate tabs for domestic and international flights. The international tabs currently list Incheon (Seoul), Busan, Daegu, Muan, Shanghai, Taiwan, Kaohsiung and Hong Kong, so you can see at a glance which airlines fly on which days.
As an example of how to read it, the Kagoshima-to-Seoul departures listed for 25 October to 30 November 2026 were:
- Korean Air 2182: departs 12:00, arrives 13:45, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
- Jeju Air 1824: departs 15:15, arrives 17:05, daily
- Korean Air 2180: departs 17:30, arrives 19:10, daily
- Eastar Jet 652: departs 18:10, arrives 19:50, daily
That works out to roughly 1 hour 40 to 50 minutes in the air, and three of the four return flights leave late in the afternoon, which frees up your last morning. The airport itself warns that airlines can change schedules without notice and that its page may lag behind, so confirm the flight number, operating days and times on the airline's own booking page right before you pay. Remember that the list above is the departure tab; inbound flights are on the Arrival tab of the same page. If you are flying in from elsewhere in Japan, the domestic tabs on the same site work the same way.
From the airport to the city: the limousine bus
Kagoshima Airport is well outside the city, and most visitors ride the airport limousine bus. According to the Kagoshima City official tourism site, the service between the airport and JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station runs on these terms:
- Travel time: about 40 minutes
- Frequency: about every 20 minutes
- Fare: 1,500 yen for adults, 750 yen for children
- Payment: cash, the local Rapica IC card, or contactless Visa, JCB, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club and Discover
- Reservations: not required
- Chuo Station stop: the bus terminal in the Kagoshima Chuo Terminal Building
- Operators: Nangoku Kotsu and Kagoshima Kotsu
Because contactless cards are accepted, you do not need a pile of cash on arrival. On the way back, leave Chuo Station by the East Exit and follow either the underground passage or the street-level crossings to the terminal building; the tourism site shows both routes step by step with photos.
You can also skip the city entirely on day one. JNTO's Kirishima Onsen page notes that buses run from Kagoshima Airport to the Kirishima hot spring area in about 35 minutes, which makes a straight-to-the-ryokan arrival realistic.
Getting around the city: day pass or CUTE pass

Downtown Kagoshima is easy to cover by streetcar, municipal bus and the City View sightseeing loop bus. There are two main passes.
1. Transportation Bureau One-day Pass and 24-hour Pass. Sold by the Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau, these cover unlimited rides on streetcars, city buses and the City View bus.
- One-day Pass (paper or smartphone): valid on the day of use only, 700 yen for adults and 350 yen for children
- 24-hour Pass (smartphone only): 24 hours from first use, 900 yen for adults and 450 yen for children
- Paper passes are scratch cards: scratch off the year, month and day, then show the driver when you get off. They are sold at bureau ticket offices, on board streetcars and buses, and at the Kagoshima-Chuo Station tourist information desk, among other places.
- Smartphone passes are bought in the Norikae Annai (Transfer Guide) app with a registered credit card; the bureau asks riders to buy before boarding.
- The passes are not valid on private bus lines.
2. The CUTE pass. As described on the official CUTE pass page, CUTE adds the Sakurajima Ferry and the Sakurajima Island View bus to municipal buses, the City View bus and streetcars.
- One-day: 1,400 yen for adults, 700 yen for children
- Two-day: 2,100 yen for adults, 1,050 yen for children
- Comes with a voucher for discounted entry to more than ten attractions, including the Museum of the Meiji Restoration, Sengan-en and Io World Kagoshima City Aquarium
- Sold at the Kagoshima-Chuo Station and Tenmonkan tourist information centers, the Sakurajima Tourist Information Center and some hotels
The rule of thumb: buy CUTE for the day you go to Sakurajima, and the 700-yen pass for city-only days. The tourism bureau itself recommends the City View day pass if Sakurajima is not on your list. The ferry runs 24 hours a day and takes about 15 minutes each way, and on the island the Island View bus makes a 30-minute loop every half hour. The City View loop in town takes about 80 minutes, so a morning at Shiroyama Observatory and Sengan-en followed by an afternoon ferry fits neatly into one CUTE day.
Ibusuki or Kirishima: choosing your onsen base

The two classic ryokan areas lie in opposite directions, so most travelers pick one. Using the official surrounding-area routes from Kagoshima-Chuo Station:
← Swipe to see more
| Ibusuki (Saraku Sand Bath Hall) | Kirishima Hot Springs (Maruo) | |
|---|---|---|
| Train | JR about 1 hr 20 min, about 50 min by limited express, to Ibusuki Station | JR about 50 min to Kirishima-Jingu Station |
| Then | Bus about 5 min | Bus about 30 min |
| Total | About 1 hr 40 min | About 1 hr 50 min |
| Setting | Seaside, hot sand baths | Mountain foothills, several spa villages |
Ibusuki is the seaside option, known for its naturally heated sand baths. It lies about 45 km south of the city by rail, and the limited express cuts the train leg to about 50 minutes, which matters if you are traveling with children.
Kirishima Onsen sits at the foot of the Kirishima mountains. JNTO counts more than ten hot springs in the area, with Maruo and Myoken the best known. Buses take about 35 minutes from the airport and about 90 minutes from the city, and the train from Chuo with a change at Hayato takes about 80 minutes. JNTO also notes that attractions are spread out, so a rental car gives the most freedom, that some ryokan open their baths to day visitors, and that an overnight ryokan stay typically includes an elaborate dinner and breakfast.
In short: choose Kirishima if you want mountain spa villages close to the airport, and Ibusuki if the sea and sand bathing are the point. If a specific ryokan prompted the trip, find out which area it is in first, then build flights and city days around it.
Sample itineraries: three and four days
These outlines use the official travel times above and keep major moves to one per day. Check real train and bus departures with the operators before you go.
Three days (one night in Kirishima, one in the city)
- Day 1: Land at Kagoshima Airport, bus about 35 minutes to Kirishima Onsen, check in, dinner and baths at the ryokan.
- Day 2: Morning walk near Kirishima-Jingu, bus and JR to Kagoshima-Chuo, drop bags at a city hotel, explore downtown on the 700-yen day pass.
- Day 3: Short morning in the city or a quick ferry hop to Sakurajima, limousine bus about 40 minutes to the airport, late-afternoon flight.
Four days (city, Sakurajima, Ibusuki ryokan, city)
- Day 1: Airport limousine bus to Chuo, city hotel, dinner around Tenmonkan.
- Day 2: CUTE one-day pass for the City View bus (Sengan-en, Shiroyama) and the ferry to Sakurajima.
- Day 3: Limited express to Ibusuki (about 50 minutes), sand bath, ryokan night.
- Day 4: Back to Chuo, limousine bus to the airport.
Keep the ryokan check-in day light. Dinner is usually served at set times and is part of what you are paying for, so arriving late means missing the main event. Leave large luggage in the city and carry a one-night bag to make transfers easier.
Final checks before you book
- Flights: confirm operating days on the airport's monthly schedule, then recheck on the airline's site before paying. Day-specific flights must match both your outbound and return dates.
- Airport transfer: no booking needed, but budget about 40 minutes to the airport on top of check-in time.
- Passes: buy CUTE only for your Sakurajima day; private buses do not accept the city day pass.
- Ryokan: check the latest check-in time, dinner start time, whether meals are included and whether there is a shuttle.
- Onsen transport: a rental car suits Kirishima; time Ibusuki around the limited express.
- Sakurajima: the city tourism site keeps a page on volcanic ash, earthquakes and typhoons, so review it alongside the weather before you leave.
Get the order right and Kagoshima is straightforward: flight days first, then the ryokan area, then the city pass.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the flight from Seoul to Kagoshima?
Based on Kagoshima Airport's schedule for 25 October to 30 November 2026 (Kagoshima to Seoul departures), about 1 hour 40 to 50 minutes. Airlines can change flight numbers and days, so confirm on the airline's site before booking.
How do I get from Kagoshima Airport to the city?
Take the airport limousine bus to JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station. It takes about 40 minutes, runs about every 20 minutes and costs 1,500 yen for adults and 750 yen for children. No reservation is needed, and cash, Rapica and major contactless cards are accepted.
Should I buy the CUTE pass or the city One-day Pass?
Buy CUTE (1,400 yen for adults for one day) on the day you ride the Sakurajima Ferry. For city-only days, the Transportation Bureau's One-day Pass (700 yen for adults) covers streetcars, city buses and the City View bus.
Is Ibusuki or Kirishima better for a ryokan stay?
Choose Ibusuki (about 1 hour 40 minutes from Kagoshima-Chuo) for the seaside and sand baths, or Kirishima (about 35 minutes by bus from the airport) for mountain spa villages. They are in opposite directions, so most short trips pick one.
Do I need a rental car for Kirishima Onsen?
No. Buses and trains reach the area, but JNTO notes that sights are spread out and a rental car offers the most flexibility. If you are staying put at one ryokan, public transport is enough.
